These are different ways of addressing different conditions. A sound diagnosis helps avoid paying for work that does not address the actual fault.

1. Regeneration: dealing with soot

Normal regeneration raises exhaust temperature to burn soot. It may happen automatically when operating conditions allow. Some vehicles offer a manufacturer-prescribed driver-assisted procedure; a garage may also consider a controlled regeneration where appropriate. Regeneration does not remove accumulated ash. A heavily loaded or faulty system may not be suitable for another attempt.

2. Off-vehicle cleaning: tackling deposits

A removed, serviceable filter can be considered for specialist cleaning. Unlike a driving cycle, an off-vehicle process is intended to remove deposits from the unit itself. Prestige’s published method uses controlled water pressure, cleaning solutions and heat treatment. Suitability depends on the filter and its condition; no cleaning process should be treated as a guaranteed repair for every unit.

3. Replacement: when the structure is damaged

Cleaning cannot rebuild a cracked or melted ceramic structure. If inspection finds damage or the filter cannot be recovered, replacement may be appropriate. Your garage should confirm the correct replacement specification and resolve the cause of failure before fitting it.
