A clean filter is one part of a healthy emissions system. To reduce the chance of another blockage, give attention to the vehicle and the conditions that led to the problem.

Resolve the underlying cause

Ask your garage to complete the diagnosis, repair any relevant faults and carry out the vehicle manufacturer’s refitting and checking procedure. Clearing a warning or fitting a cleaned filter does not, by itself, establish that the cause has been fixed.

Use your vehicle’s own regeneration guidance

Short trips and frequent stopping can make regeneration more difficult. If the handbook recommends occasional longer journeys, follow its model-specific guidance and normal road safety rules. There is no universal speed, distance or RPM setting that is right for every diesel. A longer drive also does not burn away ash.

Keep up with maintenance

Use the engine oil specification and service schedule stated by the vehicle manufacturer. Have changes in running, oil use or warning messages checked promptly. Keep a record of the cleaning date, repairs and mileage so your garage can spot a recurring pattern.

React to warnings early

Read the dashboard message and consult the handbook. Persistent warnings, severe power loss, overheating or red or flashing indicators need prompt professional advice. Do not keep driving solely to try to trigger a clean, and do not attempt an improvised forced regeneration.

A useful handover checklist

  • Underlying fault investigated and addressed by the garage.
  • Filter correctly refitted and checks completed.
  • Manufacturer’s maintenance and oil requirements understood.
  • Vehicle-specific warning and regeneration instructions available.
